From North Queensland, Cunningham joined Manly in 1986. He was a safe, reliable replacement player before cementing his first grade place under Graham Lowe. Cunningham was one of three Manly players to join Super League in 1995 (the others being lan Roberts and Matthew Ridge) and this decision ultimately cost him a State of Origin place that year. He finally represented Qld in 1996 and following Manly's grand final win over St George in 1996 he left for Nth Queensland. His time with the Cowboys proved unproductive and he returned to Manly in 1999 and made the Northern Eagles squad in 2000.
